The benefits of a home practice

There’s a lot of benefits to practising at home. First of all, there’s zero commute: no headache of fighting through traffic, trying to find a parking spot (if you drive), dealing with inclement weather, or showing up at a studio one minute after class has started just to find the door is locked. Preserving sanity, when it comes to commuting, is paramount.

There’s also less performance anxiety. We can let go of the pressure of having to conform, and instead can modify the practice to suit our needs without worrying about how that might look to others.

There’s the flexibility: join the class live if you can, and/or do the replay. Bonus if you get to do both, and notice how the same practice lands differently, depending on the day / mood.

And this: it’s much easier to chat one-on-one before / after class. We can take advantage of the flexibility that this format allows, and talk about how to modify the practice so that it makes the most sense for the current version of you.

There are other benefits (like getting to practise alongside your pet, tee hee), and they’re as individual as we each are. Not everything works for everybody, so ultimately it’s about finding what works for you.

I’ve been teaching online for five years and I’m very thankful for the folks who have shown up and continue to show up. I’d like to continue doing this for at least five more years, which means I have to acknowledge that the cost of living is changing. As a result, I’ll be raising the price of 4-week livestream sessions by $10 in 2025. I think this is still quite affordable, and hopefully you see the value in it as well.

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out here.

Take care and be well,
Adrienne

But what if we want to do more than survive – what if we want to live?

Igniting the system with energy can springboard us into skillful action. Use the container of your yoga practice to stoke the fire and let’s see what unfolds. Let’s make good trouble.

A new livestream session – REIMAGINING POSTURE – starts Wed Nov 20!

Reimagining Posture livestream session

This is not your typical yoga class.

REIMAGINING POSTURE is about uncovering ease and stability in how we sit, stand, and move through the day. Over the course of four weeks, we’ll focus on key areas of the body that affect how we hold ourselves up against gravity (feet, hips, spine, ribcage, shoulders, and skull).

We’ll let go of the notion that there’s a static perfect posture (balancing a teacup on your head? no thanks) and instead explore how a truly useful posture is one that is dynamic, adaptable, and contextual.

Unlike a usual yoga class with a guided sequence of postures, we’ll have more of a workshop-style experience with lots of experimenting, room for discussion, and the promise of real-world applications.

This is a topic that is near and dear to my heart; something I’ve been working on personally and with folks one-on-one. As much fun as it is to do an arm balancing pose or stretch into a deep backbend, to me the most important postures are the ones we take when we simply stand and sit in daily living.

And while I’d obviously like to think that each and every hour-long yoga class has a huuuuuge impact on the rest of our lives, I think it’s worthwhile for us to bring attentiveness specifically to postures we take on the daily: how we sit at our desks, stand washing the dishes, and walk up the stairs. These acts might sound mundane, but they hold the seed of magnificence: each and every one of our bodies is a vehicle for a life. When we feel good in our bodies, we do good.

So if you’re interested in exploring how your yoga / movement practice can extend off the mat, sign up! If you’re looking to address chronic back / neck / shoulder pain that has to do with sitting long hours, this is for you! If you’re hunched over your screen reading this, scroll down and register already!

Each week’s class will build on the previous. We will:

  • Cover the basics of human anatomy pertaining to posture i.e. get acquainted with our “equipment”
  • Learn simple cues for making subtle adjustments that can make a big difference
  • Become the most comfortable desk warrior in all the office-land (lol, jk, but I do really want you to be able to enjoy sitting at your desk)
  • Definitely cultivate a deeper respect and appreciation of the human body’s beautiful intelligence.

For these classes, please have a yoga mat, a blanket, and a chair. You might consider setting yourself up in your desk chair (or wherever you sit often) so that we can apply the principles of our practice to our context.

November livestream yoga session – starts Nov 4th

In the midst of a chaotic world, it’s nice to return to basics. Bearing witness. Noticing. Allowing space. Giving presence.

Less is more.

November, in my opinion, is an ideal month to reflect on the past year and to take stock. December is too busy with social functions, and/or supercharged with the destabilizing emotionality of loneliness.

So let’s get ahead of it: join me now in cultivating a gentle, nurturing space for ourselves to move, breathe, and be still.
