April livestream yoga session – starts April 7th

A little story from the Zen Buddhist tradition goes something like this:

A monk once asked Basho: “What is the essence of your practice?”
Basho replied: “Whatever is needed.”

The end!

The simplicity of this story belies all the nuance, complexity, missteps, commitment, and discipline that’s part of doing what is needed. Practice can be a time to show us what is really important (do I really need to clench my jaw during downward dog?!) and give us a chance to refine where and how we spend our energy.

Join me for practice in April, and let’s explore what is needed, on a moment-by-moment basis.

rest & digest: a 1/2 day urban retreat in April

Join me for a half-day urban yoga / meditation retreat at Open Concept on Sat April 12th (1-4 pm, $100+GST) in which we can dive deeper into the practice. A retreat gives us the chance to slow down and honour what we’ve been going through, so that we can move forward with a sense of cohesion and meaning.

Challenging experiences (whether big or small) can leave a residue in both our bodies and minds. Practice can be a way to metabolize these experiences, both through addressing the physical digestive system, and the mental/emotional processes by which we learn to integrate the past.

Expect:

  • A nourishing yoga practice that promotes the body’s ability to heal via focusing on the physical digestive system
  • Meditation practice(s) that teach us to allow for emotions and sensations (mental digestion)
  • An interactive discussion on what these practices are all about and how they can apply to daily life
  • A gentle environment that supports healing and compassionate self-inquiry
  • Simple self-care practices and food for thought as you move forward in life’s journey

This offering is a synthesis of my knowledge in yoga, somatics, Ayurveda, food science, and human physiology. My goal is to create a safe and inclusive space for all who wish to practise awareness and equanimity. You do not need any previous yoga or meditation experience to attend; what is more important is to come prepared to open your mind and heart. Capacity is limited to 22 participants.

Schedule:

1:00-1:15 PM – opening remarks
1:15 – 2:30 PM – yoga practice and meditation
2:30 – 2:45 PM – break, tea time
2:45 – 3:45 PM – dharma talk, Q&A, discussion
3:45 – 4:00 PM – closing remarks

For those familiar with Open Concept, undergoing a retreat in a familiar space frees up energy for us to go deeper into the practice. For those new to the studio but local to Winnipeg, may the accessibility of this offering be of value. Open Concept is at Grant and Kenaston, on the #66 bus route, and has free parking in the surrounding lot.

Let’s pause and de-clog! To register*, please visit Open Concept’s website HERE.

*A note about registration: Open Concept is experiencing a glitch with their booking system, MindBody – the “book” button is not working! It’s okay, we’re used to things breaking down (ha ha ha…ha.). Anyway, it is actively being worked on, but when it’ll get fixed is unknown. If you click on the link above and are unable to book yourself in, please email Open Concept here for them to help you complete registration. Thank you for your patience!!

Spring yoga: join me in-person for an 5-week session at Sport Manitoba starting March 16th!

Join me in-person this spring with 5-week yoga sessions starting Sunday March 16th at Sport Manitoba Fitness Centre!

While the names of the two class types stay the same, each session offers a slightly different theme that responds to the needs of the moment. The through line that is always maintained is an emphasis on cultivating functional movement that supports our everyday living.

Space is limited so sign up soon! Note that this is the last session at Sport MB for the time being; we will resume in the fall. There is a discount for folks who are already Fitness Centre members. Please see below for more details.

YOGA FOR STRENGTH
Sundays Mar 16-Apr 13th, 10:30-11:30 am

5-week session
$100 (public rate) / $90 (member rate, use code YOGAMEMBER)

We are stronger than we think – let’s not sell ourselves short. This session will focus on building resilience (mental / physical) through our yoga practice. When we rise up to challenge, we show ourselves our inner strength and learn how to be our own cheerleader. We will explore how to prepare for greater and greater challenge, learning how proper scaffolding is what sets us up for feeling strong and empowered.

We will work up to playing at the edges of our comfort zone, and in that, I’ll offer modifications for postures so that you can find a version of the practice that suits you best.

YOGA FOR MOBILITY
Sundays Mar 16-Apr 13th, 12-1 pm

5-week session
$100 (public rate) / $90 (member rate, use code YOGAMEMBER)

This session blends yoga and Functional Range Conditioning principles to maintain and improve range of motion in our joints. We slow things down to release tension, which then makes room for new movement patterns. This is particularly important for aging bodies (i.e. all bodies), injury recovery and prevention, and simply feeling comfortable in yourself.

I offer options to dial up / down the intensity so that you can make the practice work for your needs. Sometimes taking a step back is the more challenging choice; sometimes taking baby steps is just the right fit. Learning to adjust the practice to suit you is a key component to self-stewardship.

If you have any questions, check out this list of FAQs, or feel free to send me a message here. If you want to contact Sport Manitoba directly, you can do so here. Sport Manitoba has recently migrated to a new booking system, so if you run into any issues, don’t hesitate to message them for support.

March livestream yoga session – starts Mar 3rd

There’s a few lines in a poem called What Carries Us by Emily Jungmin Yoon , that have been sticking with me:

In this era of brevity in this era of metal in this
era of abbreviation, yes, I’m trying to make you

think of me longer.

It’s become trite to say that life moves too quickly, but it doesn’t make it any less true or easier to deal with. As we find our unique ways of navigating, what is it that supports you when times are unpeaceful? How do you find an inner sense of stability, even when the ground is moving and the winds are blowing? What carries you?

Join me for practice in March, and let’s explore what carries us in, on our yoga mats.

4-WEEK MARCH SESSION
WHAT CARRIES US: YIN & YANG YOGA

Shortly after each class, a link to the recording will be sent out, which will be available for 7 days.
