Pain is an inevitable part of the lived experience. While we can’t choose pain, we can choose how we are with the pain. Resmaa Manakem (author and founder of somatic abolitionism) puts it this way: “dirty pain” is the pain of avoidance, blame, and denial; whereas “clean pain” still hurts, it builds your capacity for growth. It fosters presence, vulnerability, and acceptance. It can be generative.
Practice can be a place where we slow down to be with what is: whether it’s pain, joy, or a confusing mixture of both. We learn how to be with what is in ways that can be nourishing and growth-oriented.
