Self-compassion is a turning towards our pain, in a non-judgmental way. It is remembering that we as flawed humans aren’t alone in our experiences. It isn’t to diminish the uniqueness of one’s circumstances, nor is it about letting us off the hook; instead, it’s to say, things are screwed up, I feel screwed up, and I can still be okay.
If we’ve been attacking ourselves for a very long time, then being gentle can not only feel unfamiliar and uncomfortable, but even suspicious and dangerous. So, we take baby steps. We let love work, slowly.
